   This book is about that form of yoga known as Raja Yoga. It is an explanation of an ancient Eastern meditation text originally written in Sanskrit over 2,300 years ago. It is based on the aphorisms (sutras) of Patanjali (commonly known as 'The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali') which are the highest authority on Raja Yoga.

   The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the chief treatise on Yoga and considered a classic and outstanding work of Eastern philosophy. The deep spiritual insight offers inspiration to all spiritual seekers. Raja Yoga offers a path to a direct and intuitive experience of Reality, to help the mind soar above the world in contemplation of the Absolute.


A Little History On The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali

   The Yoga Sutras as expounded by the sage Patanjali comprise the first and foremost scripture of Yoga. Within these nearly 200 Sutras, the entire science of Yoga is delineated: its aim, its practices, the obstacles you may meet along the path, their removal, and precise description of the results that will be obtained from the practices.

   Raja Yoga, the path of meditation and control of the mind, gives a scientific treatment of Yoga philosophy, describing methods of concentration, mental/ psychic development, and the liberation of the soul from bondage of the body. These sacred teachings invite the student to delve deeper and deeper into him/herself and discover the Truth.

   It outlines the important steps, from beginning to advanced: from moral vows and observances to control of bodily senses, from asanas (body postures) to Pranayama (breath control), up to the more advanced practices of Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (deep absorption).

   The Yoga Sutras are a complete system for the practice of yoga. It offers guidance on mastering the mind and achieving physical, mental, and emotional harmony in life through applying the ancient, yet eternally useful, techniques of Raja Yoga.

These eight means are to be followed in their order .... Until one has fulfilled the first, it is futile to concern oneself with the second. And so with all the means of Yoga. They must be taken in their order."

Book III:  Book Of Spiritual Powers

"By perfectly concentrated Meditation on power, even such power as that of the elephant may be gained." (Concentrate on the strength of an elephant, and you shall gain the strength of an elephant.)

"These powers stand in contradistinction to the highest spiritual vision. In manifestation they are called magical powers.

The divine man is destined to supersede the spiritual man, as the spiritual man supersedes the natural man. Then the disciple becomes a Master. The opened powers of the spiritual man -spiritual vision, hearing, and touch, stand, therefore, in contradistinction to the higher divine power above them, and must in no way be regarded as the end of the way, for the path has no end, but rises ever to higher and higher glories; the soul's growth and splendour have no limit. So that, if the spiritual powers we have been considering are regarded as in any sense final, they are a hindrance, a barrier to the far higher powers of the divine man. But viewed from below, from the standpoint of normal physical experience, they are powers truly magical; as the powers natural to a four dimensional being will appear magical to a three dimensional being."
